Ben and his Grandma were eating lunch one Sunday after church. Before they ate, Grandma folded her hands, bowed her head, and thanked God for the food. Ben had seen Grandma do this before. She always did this before they ate. Today Ben thought he would like to do that too.
“Can I do that too, Grandma?” he asked.
Grandma wondered for a moment what Ben was asking; then she said, “Oh, you want to pray. Yes, of
course you can pray too.”
“What should I say?” Ben asked.
“You tell Jesus thank You for giving us good food to eat,” Grandma said. “Just the same way you thanked me when I put your sandwich on the table.”
Ben said, “Thank You, Jesus, for this sandwich my Grandma made for me. My Grandma always makes good sandwiches.” Grandma smiled and hugged him.
A little while before it was time for Ben to go home, Grandma got a phone call. When she finished talking she sat on the couch and folded her hands and closed her eyes. When she opened her eyes again Ben asked, “Were you saying thank You to Jesus for your food?”
Grandma looked at him, smiled, and shook her head. “No,” she said. “One of my friends is sick, and I was praying that Jesus would take care of her. We can talk to Jesus about anything.”
“Anything?” asked Ben. He knew there were a lot of things that he would sure like to talk about to his
Friend, Jesus. Grandma nodded, and they prayed that Ben would have a safe ride home and a good week in school.
